YSK that the phrase “if it’s brown lie down, if it’s black fight back” in reference to bears is outdated
The Pain Point
Have you ever found yourself face-to-face with a bear while hiking or camping? It’s a terrifying experience, and the last thing you want to do is make things worse. For years, we’ve been told that if it’s brown (grizzly) lie down, but if it’s black (black bear) fight back. But what if I told you this advice is no longer considered the safest reaction?
Failed Attempts
I used to think that if a bear was approaching me, it didn’t matter whether it was brown or black – just make sure to follow the rules! I’d try to remember which one required fighting and which one meant playing dead. But with so many bears looking similar, it’s hard to know for sure what you’re dealing with. And let’s be honest, who wants to test that theory?
Breakthrough Hack
The breakthrough came when I learned about the modern understanding of bear behavior. It’s not just about the species; it’s about how the bear is reacting to you! There are two main behaviors: defensive and curious. Defensive bears are visibly angry, growling and slapping the ground. In this case, your best bet is to stay calm and quiet, slowly backing away from the bear while speaking in a low voice. If things go wrong, play dead by staying on your belly and protecting the back of your neck.
But what about curious bears? These ones might get closer to you without looking angry. In this case, it’s time to get loud! Yell, throw rocks, wave your arms – whatever it takes to show the bear that you’re not a food source. And if things go horribly wrong and the bear makes physical contact with you, FIGHT BACK!
Life After
So, what’s changed? Well, for starters, both brown bears and black bears can exhibit these behaviors. If you play dead in front of a curious brown bear, or fight back against a defensive black bear, you’re likely to have a bad time. But by reacting to the bear’s behavior rather than its species, you’ll be much safer.
What I Wish I Knew Sooner
Make noise while hiking and camping! Bears are less likely to approach you if they know you’re there. Carry bear spray and take a bear-aware course to learn more about these amazing creatures. By being prepared and knowing how to react, you can have a great time in the great outdoors without worrying about bears.
